How To Sell on eBay

The eBay site itself as excellent support materials to teach you how to sell, but there are many excellent tips that can only be found through experience.  For example, eBay offers many upgrades to your auction listing to increase your traffic.  These include:

  • Bold and Highlight for your auction titles
  • Border that outlines your listing with a frame
  • Gallery Photo to add a thumbnail photo in the auction listings
  • Featured Plus! that places your auction at the top of the listings in many (but not all) circumstances
  • Home Page Featured is similar to Featured Plus!, but also offers the chance to rotate your auction on the Home Page
  • Subtitle to give buyers more information by adding additional descriptive text beneath your title

Now, many of the numerous books written about how to sell on eBay will tell you that all of these upgrades apart from the gallery photo are not worth the extra fees.  Most will tell you that the gallery photo is worth the small up charge because of the extra traffic that it brings in.  The exception to this is when your selling a commodity item that needs no illustrative photo- like printer cartridges.

The true answer as to whether of these upgrades will increase your profits is that you have to test them.  Most of the aforementioned books address the average eBay seller dealing in physical products.  The authors have formed these conclusions based on experience from their own auction results.  eBay has become so competitive that margins have become razor thin for most hard goods sellers.  It is probably true that the extra fees associated with these upgrades will erode profits considerably and are probably not worth it.

The rules change, however, when you're able to increase your profit margins.  If you could source your products for next to nothing, the extra fees associated with some of these upgrades would not affect your profits considerably.  In this case, the extra traffic generated could produce many more sales.  If most of your revenue were profit, the benefits would far outweigh the costs.  But you may be thinking, "How can I source my products for next to nothing?"

The answer to that one is to sell information.  If you can produce your own information products, you have a commodity that is almost free (except for your time) and in unlimited supply. These products can have profit margins of 95% after eBay fees.  In this situation, the Featured Plus! upgrade actually makes a lot of sense.  This upgrade can boost your auction traffic substantially.

You may have noticed that more and more eBay auctions are showing up in the Google search results.  Through testing I have found that using a Featured Plus! upgrade to your auction listing greatly increases the chance of it being listed in Google's search results.  Imagine the sales boost that will give your business.

Through experience and testing you will eventually find the combination of tactics that works best for your business.  This example provides a lesson in evaluating the information that you're given.  When you find advice on how to improve your business, make sure you're comparing "apples to apples".  Take a look at what you're trying to accomplish and see if it closely resembles the situation of those providing the advice.
